Long before there were comic-book superheroes, a Swiss teacher, journalist and art critic was drawing entertaining doodles for friends. As he developed his sketches into satirical stories told over the course of multiple captioned images, he inadvertently invented the first sequential art comics in the Western world. Join Stuff You Missed in History Class to find out how bad eyesight, Goethe and the culture of early 19th-century Europe all played a part in giving rise to a medium that today is a massive entertainment industry.
